![]() “You probably think Aled Last and I are going to fall in love or something. Coupled with the fact that a lot of the book was about Aled, who was just very self centered, it became a little hard to root for the characters. It just didn’t seem like it was super healthy relationship between him and those around him especially in regards to the romantic relationship that pops up later on in the book. Everyone in the novel fell over themselves to accommodate Aled at all times, constantly apologizing for perceived slights when he was never considerate to others. I enjoyed the friendships in this book but I can’t stand Aled so the main draw of the novel of a male-female platonic friendship did not work for me. Themes of uncertainty over the future, intense anxiety over high school + university admissions + university, platonic friendships, first loves make up most of the book with a glorious setting of high school and fandom/internet culture. This is a book that I can imagine will resonate with many. ![]() ![]() But when she meets Aled, who happens to be the creator of her favourite sci-fi podcast University City, they soon form a fast friendship. ![]() Summary: Frances, an overachiever, has never had a real friend. ![]()
